You may be talking of rough idling at cold start and not misfiring. Any misfire would cause a check engine light.
An M3 is normally a little rough at cold start. Remember that mechanical tolerances for an M3 is a little on the loose side. That is one of the reasons an M3 can "free rev" to a very high rpm.
And since it has already been mentioned, I would like to add
that aftermarket airfilters are absolutely a no no. There is already a service bulletin about the subject. Changing factory air filters into aftermarket ones changes the air volume and messes up the engine computer settings. Also, cleaning and then applying oil into the said filters damages the airflow meter (which costs approximately $350. to 400.).
Leave well enough alone. BMW knows more about their cars than any tech wannabe.
Some cars are just bad from the start. check to see if anything is clogging well anywhere. thats it.
change the spark plugs and ignition wires on it
How long have you had the car? Has it had all the software updates? I remember having this problem quite a while ago if I would shut it off on a warm night, and the next time I started was much colder. The software would try to start the car based on parameters from the last shutdown (according to service tech). A software update took care of it.
I have a 04 M and I started to have that problem when I added a aftermarket Intake, the air sensor was having a problem? Check that.
