BMW e46 M3 question?
tonight I pushed the rev's over the limit on the m3. I honestly didnt mean to go past 8k rpms. Yeah so like I was saying I had the sport button on. I was stopped and just floored it, I wasnt looking at the rev limited for a split second, and I went past 8k. The egine quickly stoped me from going past 9k. Is this bad? its my first time doing this.

While it’s a pretty weird noise and makes ya wonder if ya screwed something up on the engine, don’t worry…. It’s just the rev limiter. It limits the RPMS of the engine and cuts off the fuel so the engine can’t continue to go faster or exceed the RPM limit established in the car’s software.
A computer chip will remove this rev limiter that all BMWs have.
For instance I have a 1995 325 E36 that had a rev limiter set at 128 mph. with my chip it removed the rev limit and my car now does 150 with the pedal to the floor. (Yes I’ve actually done it).
GET A CHIP 4 YOUR CAR IT WILL let u go past that 8k whatever # u didnt mess anything up your car just wont let u go over a certain limit ,..if u modify it with this chip youll be fine..
Nah, it’s not bad at all. It’s rev limiter, it’s there so you don’t blow your engine up. It will cut the fuel when it pass the limit.
Just don’t put that into habit, you’ll be fine.
.Is not good for the engine. There could have been a conrod bearing seized for a while and got free.Hope the rev limiter stooped the engine.
How is the behaviour of your engine after the stop.any abnormal sound from engine.
To make sure the engine is safe, suggest you drain out your luboil and see if there is any white metal pieces found.
change the lub. oil and oil filter could save your engine from futher damage.
Please dont try again ,coz u may blow your engine if the revs limiter fails.
Take care
It is not good for your engine, but there is a rev limiter that will prevent any accidental over revving to cause much of a problem.
If you have an SMG transmission and want to really have some fun there is a launch sequence you can perform. To get the launch sequence do the following:
– turn off the DSC
-enable the sport button and max out the sport mode (I think you will see 5 or 6 lights)
- hold the SMG lever forward and floor the car.
- release the SMG to be launched!
