The original rear wheel was 9" wide with a 255 wide tire. I’m pretty sure an 8.5" wheel will not fit a 285 tire. Even if it did, it would look funny, and be difficult to install.
A 285 is over 11" wide, so you will need a wider rim than 8.5", and besides, that is smaller than stock, so stick with stock width or more.
My car has a 9.5" wide wheel with a 265 tire on it. The M5 uses a 9.5" wide wheel with 285 tires on it.
An 8.5" wide wheel is for tires around 225 – 255 width.
