Do BMW M series cars need a lot of maintenance?

I currently drive a Toyota Highlander, but am looking to buy a sports sedan/coupe. Really like the BMW M3 reviews, but am a little worried that I will have to dish out big bucks for maintenance later.

Does anyone here have any experience with Bimmers and other sports sedans?

Suggestions for why other cars are better are also welcome

It will be expensive, but after the free service for 4 years or 50,000 miles

BMW’s are really well made cars, you won’t be going wrong if you decide to get one. The 3 series coupe are really good looking cars, even the old ones still look stylish and in date, this is because BMW haven’t really changed the design the 3 series drastically through the years.
M3’s are the ultimate 3 series and are seriously good looking cars in a sort of menacing way. However I know the tyres they have will be ‘run flat’ tyres and those are expensive to replace and they do wear down quite quickly. Plus the insurance will be at the high end, probably group 19 or 20. It won’t have a particularly good fuel economy probably about 22 mpg.
But I’d definitely get one, they’re still reliable, has a strong image, practical and you’ll definitely get a thrilling experience when driving it!

The servicing costs for the M series cars are quite a bit higher than for the normal models. Also M series specific parts are very expensive.
Also while not in general any less reliable than the standard cars the engines are a lot more highly strung and M series engines don’t tend to last as long. Although you should stuill be able to see the wrong side of 150,000 miles.
The major service, the inspection 2 which is due every fourth service, can be £1000 in the UK and that’s before you need any other bits such as brake replacing. M3 front brake discs (rotors in the US I believe) are around £500 and pads over £100.
So yes, expect highish running costs and servicing bills will be high even if nothing goes wrong.

However compared to any other make with comparable performance they are not especially expensive. Just look at how expensive it is to maintain a 911.

So in short don’t buy an M3 and expect to run it for the same cost as a 330/335. It is a high performance car with similar capabilities to a Porsche 911 so expect to pay similar money to run one.
