Doing an M3 engine swap, and turboing it, would be really expensive. I’ve seen M3 engines listed for sale at around $6k usually. USED. And a good turbo build requires alot of work too, and thats probably gonna cost you around $7k. Then you gotta do the transmission and add in the labor….so you might as well just buy an M3. If you can’t afford the M3, you probably won’t be able to afford to build a 3 series into one and then keep it for long. Save some more money and just buy the M3 when your ready, or maybe just get a 3 series and do a turbo build on that engine instead.
Upkeep on an M3, or even a turbo 3 series, isn’t going to be cheap at all. It isn’t cheap in the first place if you own a BMW anyway.
if u aint rich 4 get about it cuz rich people will pay 4 aby thing
Looks like a rebuilt one will run you about 5 grand.
There’s a saying among BMW folk: M3 stands for "multiply by 3" Like expect everything to cost 3 times as much. The M3 is one of those cars that, if you can’t afford to buy two, you can’t afford to own 1. And by doing an engine swap you’re not only taking on the cost of the swap, you’re taking on a lot of the maintenance cost of the real thing.
Just forget it. If you want an engine swap that will give you big power without all that cost, do what EVERYONE does in that situation, and put in a 5.0 Ford or a Small Block Chevy.
If you can’t afford the car, how are you going to afford the work to get the one you buy, set up the way you want it.
get a VW diesel
Try looking in the auto classifieds on Craigslist (http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites.html) or Autotrader (http://www.autotrader.com/).
Some E36 M3’s are going for about $8000 on occasion with just cosmetic problems or high mileage. So it is worth spending some time to look
But if you really can’t save up some money and afford a used E36 M3 for this price, then likely you will not be able to afford to do an engine swap, nor the maintenance. An engine swap with an E36 M3 motor will cost in excess of $4000 and turbocharging it would cost in excess of $4000 as well. And if you can’t afford the maintenance, the car will run badly and you will not be happy with it.
You could always get a E36 328i coupe which goes for a little cheaper, and then just supercharge the engine and get 310 hp, 70 hp more than an E36 M3!
Best of luck!
Don’t bother with the M engine just get the turbo. M engines are a short lived engine cost about 10K to rebuild right. A regular engine will last longer and the cost of a rebuild is nothing compared to a M engine. The Turbo will give you much more horse power than the standard M engine. If you had a Turboed M engine and regular engine side my side the power difference is minimal. Well worth the power loss with the over all costs involved. You will a smarted and richer guy. Oh and bolth engines really don’t last very long with a turbo in them.
Sorry mate but what you are proposing would cost three times the cost of simply purchasing an M3 outright. You can’t just ‘drop in’ a M3 engine or turbo chargers like they were a bike horn and streamers. It would require an overhaul of all your major systems in the car… transmission, cooling, intake, exhaust, injection, ECU…an M3 powerplant and everything else under the M’s hood is designed just for that car.
If you are serious about BMW and performance don’t rice out some old bimmer. Save your money and get an M3 when you can afford not only the car… but the proper upkeep of it as well. Trust me it’ll be worth it.
just enjoy your e36 and save fore an m in the future.
the m3 badges look really sad on non m cars
