The CSL (Coupe Sport Lightweight) received an aggressive weight reduction, more power (up to 360 hp), and sharper handling characteristics than the standard M3, courtesy of semi-slick racing tires. From the exterior, the CSL is distinguished from its standard sibling with a different wheel design, larger integrated rear spoiler and a large air intake hole on the left side of the front bumper. Weight loss was achieved through use of a carbon-fiber roof, carbon-fiber trunk lid, lighter exhaust manifold, thinner rear glass, carbon fiber interior door panels and console, lightweight racing seats, and the removal of side air bags. Several other features such as air conditioning and radio were also deleted, although these options could be added at the request of the owner.
This car will never be allowed on the streets of America, so don’t look for it here anytime soon.
The trunk bottom (yeah, just above the gas tank) is made of cardboard.
If you think driving a BMW in the snow is hard, this baby is the same way in the rain!
Some current BMW’s offer 414 bhp, so that would be your better choice if you are mainly looking for a speedy Bimmer.
Check out the new M1 when it is available – whew! The 2008 1 Series (here in America, and nothing like the Euro version) will start at $55,000. base.
I like the carbon fiber roof (like the 6 series), but don’t like the various safety deletions demanded for racing in America, nor do I like the various luxury deletions demanded by drivers here in America.
The CSL (Coupe Sport Lightweight) as mentioned above is a true purists car. It wasn’t made for comfort…it was made for racing. On top of all the mods and differences mentioned by the previous answer, it also boasts a much more aggressive SMG transmission, which makes the standard version SMG on the standard M3 seem like a lazy automatic. It also has a special M Mode, which changes it’s characteristics quite a bit, by letting the driver experience more drift before the DSC kicks in to save him from an accident. It also quickens the throttle response time, and sets the car up for "track mode" The closest thing to the E-46 M3 CSL is the M3 with the Competition Package…it includes the CSL’s high performance brake system, and it’s wheels.
it is more powerful
