What is the lifespan of a BMW E46 M3?
I am looking at buying a 2001- 2004 BMW E46 M3 with 30-50K miles. I had a couple of questions.
1. Will a manual transmission last longer than the SMG transmission, and which would be better in terms of the life expectancy of the car?
2. I have heard alot about S4 engines dying after 70K miles. What is a reasonably life expectancy for an E46 M3? and are there common problems that come with age?
3. Is there a better car choice for 25-30 Grand?

SMG gearboxes have a reputation for issues with the electronics modules that control them. For better reliability, and a more satisfying driving experience, a regular manual is preferable.
Early S54 motors had connecting rod bearing issues that BMW addressed, and offered an extended warranty on (to 100k miles). I’ve not heard reports of failures around 70k miles, although like all BMW’s at that mileage I’d be looking at preventative maintenance on the cooling system, especially the water pump, thermostat and radiator. 150k miles should be very reasonable, even more if you don’t beat on the car too hard (don’t rev it to 8k all the time…..)
If you like the idea of a fast but still quite practical car that handles very well indeed, then I’d say not. The M-car driving experience is only equalled by Porsches and a handful of others. On the other hand, if you’re not an enthusiast driver, don’t like a firm ride, and are adverse to spending money for maintenance then there are many more practical cars for the money. It depends on your priorities.
1. Manual if you drive it right
2. Most european cars poop out around that mileage, life expectancy(like any other car) depends on how well you maintain and drive the car. Common problems are relevant to oil issues and such
3. Yes, many. Depends on if you want a american, japanese, or european car. Im guessing you already know other car choices since you are thinking of getting an e46
You are better off searching these already-asked questions on BMW forums. There are a lot of experienced m3 owners there who will help you out.
good luck!
