Drifting comes from increased horse power and not increase wheel width (i.e contact patch). Aftermaket wheels such as the WELL known brand B.B.S. make light wheels which usually increase grip in the front and rear of the car thus actually reducing the ability to drift per se. An extreme of this would be to put wide wheels on the front and narrow in the rear which would increase the chances of the back end sliding out (i.e. oversteering) on you.

If I were you, I would get 17" BBS wheels, even width for your car. I would get it in diamond black and I would consider leaving the BBS logo in the cap. The thought about 18" or 19" are that usually the tires cost a bit more to replace. I guess I would go no higher than 18"..

Another option would be to have your orginal wheels sent out to be painted diamond black, I was going to do that with my Z3..

If I can be completely honest, aftermarket rims won’t do what you’re looking for. Larger aftermarket wheels are generally poorly balanced, and most of the time have negative impact on both the handling and ride quality of your car. As a personal recommendation, I would say buy a set of BMW M rims made for a newer M3, as they’ll provide the quality that doesn’t come with aftermarket parts. As for tires, don’t skimp out, make sure to get a good set of brand name summer specific performance tires, as tires are the only part of your car that touches the ground.

See if you can find some BMW forged 5-spoke M3 wheels. I have the same year of M3 with those wheels on it. The wheels have a more shiny and metallic look. They are easier to clean than the stock 10-spoke. You don’t have to worry about finding the right size and offsets. Lastly, they keep the look semi-stock, but still pretty classy.
